Campaigning for the November 30 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) bypolls to 12 wards ended on Friday evening, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress making last-minute attempts through rallies and roadshows to reach out to voters.
The byelections’ outcome is unlikely to turn the tables in the MCD House, where the BJP holds a comfortable majority. In the first direct contest between the three major parties since the February Delhi Assembly election, AAP is looking to regain lost ground by highlighting “BJP’s failed promises” while the ruling party is seeking to increase its tally in the civic body on its development plank. For Congress, a favourable result could set the stage for revival in the Capital.
Out of the 12 MCD wards going to the bypolls, nine were held by the BJP and three by AAP.
The byelections were necessitated following the election of 11 councillors to the Delhi Assembly and one to the Lok Sabha.
Addressing a rally in Shalimar Bagh on Friday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, “Every vote for the BJP is a vote for development, improved civic amenities and a brighter future for Delhi.”
AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh said in Naraina, “Nine months ago, the people of Delhi made a mistake, and today the city is regretting it.”
Senior AAP leader Atishi said at a roadshow in Pandav Nagar, “People must vote for those who work, not for those who come in the way of work.”
Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav sought votes for his candidates to rid the city of the politics of “lies, deceit, greed and graft”.
A total of 51 candidates, including 26 women, are in the fray. The results are scheduled for December 3.
