SDGs portrayed through art
‘Sustainability Through Arts’ was the theme of an inter-departmental art competition ‘Chroma Quest 2025’ organised by the Deanery of Academics, in collaboration with the Student Council at Bishop Heber College, in which over 300 students participated recently. The entries included the portrayal of sustainable development goals (SDGs) through painting, fashion, henna and doodling art forms. In his inaugural, Prof. J. Edwin Moses, faculty advisor, Student Council emphasised the importance of merging artistic creativity with SDGs to create purposeful art.
Heritage grains expo
Over 150 varieties of heritage paddy from Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions were the displayed at an exhibition titled ‘Grains of Tradition’ organised by the Department of Bioinformatics of Bishop Heber College in collaboration with the Nel Jayaraman Traditional Paddy Conservation Centre, Thiruthuraipoondi, and the Traditional Paddy Council recently. In his address, S. Rajiv, state coordinator, Nel Jayaraman Traditional Paddy Conservation Centre, introduced the emerging concept of the ‘White Revolution’ in traditional rice conservation. Ragunathan Viswanathan, chairman and chief functionary, Traditional Paddy Council, addressed the scientific dimension by emphasising the presence of bioactive molecules in native rice varieties and their potential therapeutic value. Farmers and stalls operated by self-help groups and entrepreneurs, showcased organic and value-added millet and rice-based products. The programme also featured expert lectures, on sustainability, farming heritage and food security.
AI workshop
The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in machine learning for internet-connected devices was the focus of a two-day workshop organised by the Innova Club and Department of Information Technology at Cauvery College for Women recently. In her address, S. Muthumari, of Bishop Heber College spoke on machine learning using AI.
Chemistry conference
A two-day conference on the theme ‘Transformative Approaches in Chemistry and Microbiome Science in AI Era’ organised by PG and Research Department of Chemistry, School of Physical Sciences, Holy Cross College, Tiruchi, in collaboration with the Centre of Excellence in Microbiome (CoEM), Kerala, served as a catalyst for fostering research collaboration and future-ready scientific practices. Sponsored by the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, the conference marked the 90th anniversary of the college’s PG and Research Department of Chemistry. R. Thirumurugan, registrar, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Tiruvarur, delivered the inaugural address. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the college with CoEM to promote institutional and research collaborations. Technical sessions were helmed by subject experts from institutions in Tiruchi, Qatar, Australia, among others, over the two days.
Awareness programme
Members of the Water Environment Students’ Club of Jamal Mohamed College, in association with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), Tiruchi, held an awareness programme to mark National Pollution Control Day recently. S. Sivaranjani, District Environmental Engineer, and S. Haripriya, Assistant Environmental Engineer, from TNPCB, spoke on sustainable practices, waste management, and students’ role in creating a pollution-free future. The programme included a pledge-taking and signature campaign to promote green environment.
Commemorative events
A series of community service events were hosted by Periyar College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Tiruchi to commemorate the 93rd birth anniversary of the institution’s founder-chairman K.Veeramani recently. The schedule included a tree plantation drive on the campus by the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and blood donation camp by the Red Ribbon Club in association with the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital’s blood bank. In addition to this, general medical checkup and eye screening camps were held for members of the public in association with the Eye Foundation.
Inter-college competitions
The student team from the Cauvery College for Women won the overall prize at ‘Byte Bash 2025’, the inter-collegiate hosted by Department of Computer Science and Computer Applications (Self – Financed) of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College in association with Binary Brains Club and Abacus Club Tiruchi recently. The team from AIMAN College of Arts and Science for Women won the runner-up prize. The competitions were aimed to promote creativity, critical thinking, and skill development among students.
Exploring the teachings of Bhagavad Gita
Swami Ramakrishnananda, resident spiritual guide, Chinmaya Mission, Nagapattinam, made a presentation on the theme ‘Play the Game of Life: The Gita Way, presenting the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita through an engaging and interactive session during a programme on Gita Jayanthi, organised by the Gita Club of Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College recently. Emphasising the importance of facing challenges with courage, he urged students not to run away from difficulties.
Healthcare sector employment
Job opportunities in the healthcare sector were the focus of a workshop for final-year undergraduates organised by Institute Management Committee and Training and Placement Cell of Thanthai Periyar Government Arts and Science College in association with Kauvery Hospital, in Tiruchi recently. In her special address, P. Subburethina Bharathi, DGM–Learning and Development, Skill Bay Academy, Kauvery Hospital, provided an in-depth overview of the emerging job roles in hospitals and allied healthcare services, including patient care management, medical record management, health informatics, diagnostic support services, administrative roles, and soft skills-based positions.
Graduation day
A total of 365 students received their degrees during the 14th convocation ceremony held by Chettinad Engineering and Technology College in Puliyur, Karur, recently. In her convocation address, Subhashini Sithivinayagam, vice-president, Product Engineering, Ideassion Technology Solutions, Chennai, focused on emphasized the importance of staying abreast of new knowledge and adapting to the evolving landscape of modern industries.
