A new video surveillance system was inaugurated at Tiruchi Junction on Saturday, strengthening passenger safety and security at one of the busiest railway stations under Southern Railway.

According to an official press note, Balak Ram Negi, Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager, inaugurated the facility and inspected the newly installed CCTV cameras in the station.

The signal and telecommunication branch of the Tiruchi Division executed the project under a scheme to replace the existing CCTV network. A total of 185 high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed, covering platforms 1A to 8, the main entrance and exit, the additional and second entry points, waiting halls, reservation counters, parking areas, pedestrian overbridges, subway, railway yards, and other critical passenger movement areas.

The installation replaces an older surveillance network and integrates a fully IP-based system featuring Full HD and Ultra HD cameras linked to a large-format monitoring display in a dedicated control room. The network comprises workstations, servers, network video recorders, external storage devices, copper-to-fibre media converters, video management and recording software, AI-enabled video analytics, and face recognition software. The project had been implemented at a cost of ₹2.26 crore.

The upgraded surveillance system would be monitored round the clock by the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The advanced facility was expected to significantly improve passenger safety and help swiftly detect and apprehend offenders involved in theft, chain-snatching, harassment, and unauthorised entry, the release added.
