The proposal to move a no-confidence motion against Nellore Mayor Potluri Sravanthi is set to move forward, with Municipal Administration Minister and Nellore City MLA P. Narayana meeting Nellore Rural MLA Mr. Sridhar Reddy to finalise the plan.
The corporation spans both constituencies, and the move has been expected since the change of government. The YSRCP won the corporation with a large majority in 2021, and the mayorship, reserved for an ST woman, went to Potluri Sravanthi, a close associate of Mr. Sridhar Reddy.
After Mr. Sridhar Reddy shifted from the YSRCP to the TDP in 2023, she continued to back the YSRCP. Following the 2024 elections, she reportedly tried to reconnect with her former mentor, but he showed little interest in taking her back. Her attempts to approach the BJP and the Jana Sena Party also did not yield much response, eventually prompting her to realign with the YSRCP.
She completed four years in office on Sunday, but her history of shifting loyalties appears to be working against her, with party leaders deciding to move firmly on the matter.
Mr. Narayana and Mr. Sridhar Reddy held a key meeting at the latter’s office on Sunday with the Deputy Mayors and senior corporators, signalling that the process is now under way. NDA leaders have already secured the required signatures and will meet the Collector on Monday to submit the no-confidence plea. “The TDP has 41 corporators in the 54-member council, so the move should sail through smoothly,” Mr. Sridhar Reddy told The Hindu, adding that a change in leadership is likely within two weeks.
The meeting also discussed increasing the number of divisions from 54 to 71 to reflect the city’s expanded limits, a proposal that has already sparked interest among those eyeing positions in the new divisions.
