Marking World Stroke Day, which fell on October 29, Rela Hospital on Friday (October 31, 2025) unveiled a mobile stroke care unit and also launched a dedicated support group for stroke survivors, called ‘New Beginnings’, a press release said.
Film director Aishwarya Rajinikanth launched the services in the presence of Mohamed Rela, chairman, Rela Hospital; Shankar Balakrishnan, clinical lead, neurology and neurosciences; and Muralidharan Vetrivel, cerebrovascular neurosurgeon, department of neurosciences, Rela Hospital.
The Mobile Stroke Care unit will provide rapid-response outreach, including on-site neurological assessment, thrombosis screening, emergency transport coordination, tele-consultations with neurologists, and initial rehabilitation counselling.
The ‘New Beginnings’ support group will offer stroke survivors and their caregivers a structured platform to stay connected, share experiences, and access guidance.
Mr. Rela said that stroke incidence in India was rising rapidly along with stroke-related mortality and disability. However, when detected early, stroke can often be treated successfully, reducing both death and long-term disability.
Dr. Shankar Balakrishnan noted that risk factors for a stroke include uncontrolled high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes mellitus, smoking, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle. People at high risk should consider regular vascular screening and work with their physicians to manage risk factors, he said.
Rela Hospital’s mobile stroke care unit can be reached on: 044 6666 7788.
