Chennai Metro Rail passengers were forced to walk inside the tunnel on Tuesday morning (December 2, 2025) near the High Court station due to a technical glitch.
Around 5.45 a.m., a train departed from Chennai Central Metro Rail station towards Wimco Nagar, sources said. Just a few minutes later, the train halted inside the tunnel between Chennai Central station and High Court station.
“The train’s battery had shut down, and as a result, there was no powe,r and it stopped. We tried to switch it on again, but it didn’t work. Hence, we decided to quickly take all the passengers and walk them down within the tunnel to the High Court station. The tunnel lights were available, and hence they could walk. Soon, they all boarded the next train from High Court station to their respective destinations,” a source said.
Train towed
The train that suffered the glitch was towed using another train and brought back to Chennai Central station. The services were disrupted between Chennai Central and High Court station for nearly half hour.
In a statement, Chennai Metro Rail Limited said: “Due to a technical issue, the metro train was halted between High Court station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro Station. Immediate evacuation was done, and the train has been promptly withdrawn from the line. Normal operations have resumed at 6:20 a.m. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
Later in the day, the train will be taken to the depot at Koyambedu to attend to the fault.
