A 21-year-old history-sheeter allegedly involved in the murder of another history-sheeter was caught by the police in Mandaveli after they shot him in the leg when he reportedly attacked a police constable and tried to escape near the Indira Nagar MRTS railway station early on Saturday (November 22, 2025).

The suspect, Vijayakumar, 21, of Vishalakshi Thottam in Abiramapuram, was tracked down by a special team led by Mylapore Inspector Ambedkar while they were searching for suspects involved in the murder of Mouli, another history-sheeter.

Mouli, 24, was hacked to death by a six-member bike-borne gang in Mandaveli on Thursday (November 20). A resident of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board quarters on Subbarayan Street and a call driver by profession, Mouli had more than four criminal cases pending against him and was listed as a ‘C’ category rowdy, the police said.

Early on Saturday, a police team surrounded Vijayakumar near the Indira Nagar MRTS station. The police said he drew a knife and attacked constable Tamilarasan. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, he attempted to flee, prompting the inspector to open fire and shoot him in the leg. He was then incapacitated and apprehended, the police said.

Vijayakumar was rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital and later shifted to the prisoner’s ward at the Government Stanley Hospital. The police said he had eight criminal cases against him. Two others — Gautham and Niranjan — were picked up from a hideout in the city, as they were also allegedly involved in Mouli’s murder, according to the police.

Police sources said Mouli and Vijayakumar had known each other for years. Mouli had moved from Vishalakshi Thottam to Red Hills a few years ago but continued visiting his former neighbourhood to meet friends. Vijayakumar had reportedly objected to Mouli befriending his elder sister on social media. The police also said Mouli frequently picked quarrels with groups in the locality.
