Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday extended his greetings to fishermen through videoconference on occasion of the World Fisheries Day celebration held at Colachel in Kanniyakumari district.
Addressing the gathering, he recalled that in 2023 a fishermen conference was organised in Ramanathapuram, during which welfare assistance was disbursed to 14,000 beneficiaries.
He pointed out in April this year, the Tamil Nadu assembly unanimously adopted a resolution, urging the retrieval of Katchatheevu from Sri Lanka.
āSince the BJP government refused to act on our demands, it has become our responsibility to ensure maximum support to our fishermen. On April 7, we announced welfare schemes worth ā¹ 576 crore for the fishermen of the districts of Gulf of Mannar region,ā he noted.
The Chief Minister also stated that a letter had been sent to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman seeking the immediate release of ā¹ 350 crore for the expansion of Colachel fishing harbour.
Emphasising that the dravidian model government has consistently prioritized the upliftment of fishermen, Mr. Stalin said that in the last four years alone, infrastructure projects worth ā¹567 crore have been implemented in Kanniyakumari district for the welfare of fishermen
