A team at the Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU), Chennai, recently treated an 11-year-old boy diagnosed with Right Retrocaval Ureter — a rare congenital anomaly, where the ureter (tube that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder) passes behind a major vein, causing kidney obstruction and swelling.
According to a press release, the child underwent a robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloureterostomy, performed by Arun Kumar B., consultant urologist and robotic surgeon at AINU.
The robotic approach allowed precise reconstruction through small incisions, resulting in minimal pain, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery. Post-surgery scans confirmed normal kidney function and urine flow.
Dr. Arun Kumar noted that early diagnosis and timely surgical correction were essential to prevent long-term kidney damage in such cases.
