The Delhi police arrested three persons and apprehended two juveniles over two days on Tuesday and Wednesday in connection with the kidnapping of a 27-day-old infant in West Delhi’s Tilak Nagar. The police have rescued the infant after being kidnapped for 21 days by the juveniles.
“The child was rescued safely and returned to the couple. They are poor street vendors and were sleeping on the road below the metro line when the incident occurred. The investigation is on to figure out whether the couple had been involved in other similar incidents to obtain a child,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Darade Sharad Bhaskar said.
Having been married for 15 years, a childless couple – Shubh Karan and Sanyogita – along with Maya, their neighbour, hatched a plan, earlier this month, to abduct a newborn from a homeless couple. Abiding by the plan, Maya offered ₹20,000 to two minor boys to kidnap the child, the police said, adding that it is, however, not clear who arranged the amount.
The parents of the infant filed a complaint at Tilak Nagar police station on October 8, after the two juveniles kidnapped the baby earlier that day, the police said. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under Section 137 (kidnapping) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the three accused.
At 5 a.m. on October 8, the teenagers kidnapped the child when the couple was sleeping under the metro line in the Tilak Nagar area, as per the complaint.
Upon receiving the complaint, the police scrutinised 200 CCTV cameras and tracked the minor boys involved in the crime through the scooter on which they arrived at the location. Vikas alias Ryon, who is lodged in jail for stealing the scooter, has lent it to Anil, who gave the two-wheeler to the minor boys. The juveniles informed the police about the involvement of the couple and Maya.
