In the wake of reports that the Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government over the appointment of Director-General of Police (DGP), AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday urged the DMK government to appoint one of the names in the list suggested by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
“I urge for appointing at once a senior officer from the list sent by the UPSC as the DGP, so as to maintain the law and order situation and to ensure the independent functioning of the police force,” he said in a statement.
Mr. Palaniswami alleged that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had “deliberately appointed a DGP in-charge temporarily so as to delay the appointment of the DGP”, as the UPSC had not recommended junior officers who were likely to act at the behest of the DMK government, since many eligible senior police officers were waiting.
“Even after a case has been moved in the Supreme Court over the non-appointment of a DGP in Tamil Nadu, this government has not taken any steps. So, a contempt petition has been moved on November 7, 2025 for action against the DMK government, which has not implemented the Supreme Court order. The apex court has issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government returnable in three weeks.”
Mr. Palaniswami listed several instances of offences reported in various parts of the State and contended: “We could go about listing more such incidents. When we look at the deteriorating law and order situation and compromise on the safety of women, it only shows that the offenders do not have any fear of the rule of law or the police force.”
Charging that the law and order situation in the State was deteriorating under the DMK government, Mr. Palaniswami recalled the police force was efficient under the erstwhile AIADMK regime. “During the past 54 months, the police force has lost its respect under the DMK government.” He charged that the people were suffering under the “evil force” in the DMK government.
Contending that the DMK government had allegedly failed on all fronts during the past four-and-a-half years, Mr. Palaniswami said: “The people would not bear with the failing of the law and order situation. The people of Tamil Nadu would not accept that Mr. Stalin, who assumed office to uphold the Constitution, is leading a government for his own welfare.”
