The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) does not accept the labour codes brought in by the BJP-led government at the Centre, said the All India general secretary of the union Tapan Kumar Sen in Coimbatore on Thursday.

Speaking at the inaugural of the two-day State-level conference of the CITU here, he said that it was challenging times not only for the unions and the workers but for all the people in the country. Only when the workers decide to protest against the policies of the Centre will these attacks on the public end, he said.

The workers should protest against the policies of the government that are against them and the environment. Already 15,000 foreign companies have invested in India and are enjoying the natural resources available in India. There should be several strong conditions for the overseas companies. The government should levy strict norms for these companies.

In Tamil Nadu, the role of workers in value addition in manufacturing is 20% though the national average is 15%.

The CITU will continue to pursue with the government the need for house pattas and houses to plantation workers in the State and total implementation of the Street Vendors Protection Act. The government should provide social security to workers in the unorganised sector too, it said.
