Dr Dibya Kumar Baruah, senior interventional cardiologist and Director of Catheterization laboratory, Apollo Hospitals, Health City, Visakhapatnam, recently participated as an invited faculty at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) 2025, which concluded recently at San Francisco, USA.
Complex coronary artery disease (CCAD) with calcium deposits is increasing day-to-day due to increasing prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, kidney disease. Dr Baruah, who has immense experience in the treatment of complex coronary artery disease with pioneering works and publications in this field, presented the result of a study on “Utility of ultra-high-pressure balloon in the treatment of undilatable coronary lesions” in this global forum of interventional cardiology, said a statement issued by the hospital.
The result of this study was positive and parallel to another landmark trial presented at the same conference. Abstract of his study will be published in the – Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC). Dr Baruah also showed the treatment modality of diffuse complex coronary disease, which is even not suitable for CABG, by hybrid technique of using both drug-eluting stent and relatively novel technique of using drug-coated balloon (DCB).
He had made multiple contributions in the field of DCB, for which he was given the responsibility to moderate a session on DCB at the TCT. This technology allows cardiologists to treat block in the artery using only balloon which delivers drugs locally in the treated segment without any systemic effects. This makes the artery free of long metal jackets (stents) and keeps open more avenues for future interventions and surgery.
Dr Baruah has vast experience on DCB in Andhra Pradesh. He has also participated in various complex coronary and valvular intervention as an expert panellist in this conference and shared his expertise and experiences in percutaneous treatment of complex coronary artery disease.
