City hospitals achieve milestones with rare and complex surgeries

An eight-year-old girl with a rare pancreatic tumour received timely relief after doctors at KIMS Hospital, Seethammadhara, performed an advanced surgical procedure.

Sharing details of the case, Dr. Muralidhar Nambada, chief consultant – gastrointestinal, hepato-biliary, and pancreatic surgeon, said that the girl came to the hospital with severe abdominal pain.

Following an endoscopic ultrasound by Dr. Achanta Chalapathi Rao, gastroenterology chief, the pancreatic tumour known as solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm (SPEN) was detected. Although SPEN carries low cancer risk, there is a possibility of future complications. The team of doctors choose to remove it.

A laparoscopic central pancreatectomy (keyhole surgery) was performed and the tumour was removed. Dr. Ravi Chandra Reddy and Dr. Gopala Krishna were also part of the surgical team.

At Narayana Medciti, a highly complex Whipple’s Pancreatiduodenectomy with simultaneous pancreatic necrosectomy was performed on a 59-year-old patient Somnath. The surgery was led by Dr. T. Narayana Rao, surgeon and CMD of the hospital, who was assisted by Dr. T Aditya with Dr. D. Vijaya Kumar providing anaesthesia care.

CARE Hospitals hosted Dr. Nimrod Snir, Director of the Adult Reconstruction Unit at Tel Aviv Medical Center, Israel, as part of a focused knowledge exchange programme designed to enhance clinical expertise, surgical precision, and exposure to international best practices. Dr. Snir observed a knee replacement surgery.
