City police arrest youth involved in six theft cases

The Mangaluru East police have arrested Adit Gopan alias Muttu Krishna, 32, of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, who is accused in two cases of chain-snatching and four cases of vehicle theft registered in Mangaluru and Udupi districts.

The police have recovered ₹5 lakh worth stolen property, including four stolen two-wheelers, from him.

An 83-year-old woman from Kadri had reported to the Mangaluru East police that a motorcycle-borne youth snatched her gold chain when she was in Battagudde on November 21.

A special team of Mangaluru East police led by Inspector Ananth Padmanabh apprehended Gopan near Jogi Mutt where he was found riding a two-wheeler stolen from Surathkal police station limits. On further inquiry, Gopan reportedly confessed that he snatched chains of women by using vehicles he had stolen. One among the victim was the 83-year-old woman of Kadri.

The police produced Gopan before the jurisdictional Magistrate, who remanded him in police custody for three days.

The police said Gopan was accused in four cases of house break in theft registered in Tamil Nadu. He has been moving around the country in trains and carrying out thefts in different places, the police said.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said of the 72 two-wheelers reported stolen this year so far, the city police traced 57 vehicles. The stolen vehicle detection rate of city police was at 79%, he said.
