
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurating Mullaperiyar drinking water project in Madurai on Sunday.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Sunday dedicated new drinking water project drawn from Mullaperiyar river to Madurai city.
With this project commissioned, a total of 2,57,750 houses in Madurai city would get potable water. It was implemented at a cost of ₹2,070.69 crore under the Union government’s AMRUT scheme.
Corporation officials said that a check dam had been constructed at Vairavanaar in Lower Camp area. After drawing 125 MLD water from the river, it is being pumped with 425 HP capacity motors (four numbers) to an overhead tank. It was brought through pipelines laid for 94 km to Pannaipatti.
After treating the raw water in Pannaipatti, it is being drawn through pipelines for 54 kilometres to Madurai city and pumped in to 38 new OHTs and 43 existing ones from where the potable water is being supplied to the residents.
During the AIADMK regime, the then Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami laid the foundation stone for the mega project marking the centenary celebrations of the late leader M.G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK founder.
With operational delays, the present government had completed the project and trial run was under way for over six months.
Recently, Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, senior officials, including Municipal Administration Director P. Madhusudhan Reddy, and others inspected the treatment plant and other completed works.
