The perennial traffic snarl along the six-km-long cramped stretch between Kallidaikurichi and Ambasamudram may become a thing of the past as a bypass road connecting these two towns was inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin thorough videoconference on Saturday.

This bypass road, which is part of State Highways 40 connecting Tiruchendur and Shencottai via Palayamkottai, Ambasamduram, Tenkasi and Courtallam, was planned a decade ago to ease traffic congestion and avert frequent accidents. Even though the existing road could not be widened due to the shops along the two sides, work on the bypass road was not taken-up immediately due to procedural delays and delay in acquisition of land for the bypass road.

After the administrative sanction was obtained on March 29, 2022, the government allocated Rs. 65.99 crore for laying the 6.049 Km-long road, which has been completed in 27 months. The 10-meter-wide 2-lane stretch with two elevated bridges across the Tamirabharani River and the Kannadiyan Channel and two box bridges over Nadhiyunni Channel and a small irrigation channel will reduce the 30-minute-long drive between Kallidaikurichi and Ambasamudram to 10 minutes.

After the Chief Minister inaugurated the bypass road, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu, District Collector R. Sukumar, Palyamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab, Tirunelveli District Panchayat chairman V.S.R. Jegadeesh planted tree saplings at Pottal near Kallidaikurichi and distributed sweets to mark the event.
