The Coimbatore city police opened fire on three men in the early hours of Saturday (November 29, 2025) after they allegedly attempted to assault police personnel with a sickle during an operation to secure them in connection with a series of burglaries reported in Kavundampalayam on Friday (November 28).
According to the police, 13 flats at the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) complex in Kavundampalayam were broken open, and 56 sovereigns of jewellery, 3 kg of silver, and ₹3 lakh were stolen on Friday afternoon (November 28). The break-ins occurred across three flats in Block A and 10 flats in Block C-3.
Senior officers, including City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar, inspected the scene, and forensic teams and a sniffer dog unit were deployed. An investigation was initiated to identify the burglars.
Based on CCTV footage and other leads, three men — Ashik (45), Arif (60), and Irfan (48), all from Uttar Pradesh — were identified as suspects linked to the break-ins. Multiple special teams were formed to trace them.
The teams located the men at a house in Kulathupalayam early on Saturday (November 29). During the operation, one head constable was allegedly attacked by the suspects and sustained injuries, which prompted police personnel to open fire below their knees before securing them.
The three injured suspects were admitted to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Further investigation is on.
