The Coimbatore Corporation has taken up repair works to commission a multi-level car parking facility on DB Road in R.S. Puram.

The facility constructed by the Corporation is a ground-plus four-storeyed structure on 2.87 acres and can accommodate 373 cars. It was taken up under the Smart Cities Mission at around ₹40.78 crore and completed in June 2022.

However, commissioning was delayed as the civic body awaited electricity connection, which required a completion certificate from the Local Planning Authority. When tenders were invited for operation and maintenance after completing the procedures, no firm came forward.

As the facility remains unused, the mechanical components, including the lift and shuttle systems, became inoperative. “We had to carry out repair works, including replacement of spares, greasing, and system checks. The first and second floors are operational allowing parking for about 160 cars. Works on the third and fourth floors are expected to be completed in two months,” an official said.

The Corporation has started allowing vehicles to be parked on the first and second floors using the lift system. “At present, around 130 cars are parked on the ground floor, including those occupying the open area within the premises. Vehicle owners have been informed that the facility is being brought into operation,” the official said.

The facility is designed as a fully automated parking structure, with lift system for vertical movement of vehicles and trolleys for horizontal transfer to parking slots. The average parking or retrieval time for vehicles from the first and second floors is around 60 seconds, and for the upper floors around 90 seconds.

“There is no change in charges as the monthly charge is fixed at ₹3,540. The ticketing counter and restrooms are also repaired. The open area in the facility is being paved and may be used for either car or two-wheeler parking. An EV charging station is also planned,” the official added.

The Corporation proposes to develop a food court within the premises under the public-private partnership mode at ₹6 crore. The proposal has been sent to the Directorate of Municipal Administration for approval.
