A private firm has been fined by the Coimbatore Corporation for transporting food meant for municipal sanitation workers, deployed at the under-construction Semmozhi Poonga in Gandhipuram, in a garbage vehicle.

The incident came to light recently after a photograph showing food packets stacked in the vehicle circulated widely on social media, prompting AIADMK and BJP leaders to term it a humiliation of the workers.

In a press release, the Corporation said that the firm had used a battery-operated vehicle for transporting the food and confirmed that a fine had been imposed.

The Coimbatore Corporation is working against the clock to complete the Semmozhi Poonga project ahead of its inauguration, likely on November 25, deploying a large workforce comprising municipal sanitation workers, staff, and engineers to ensure timely completion.
