The State Government has accorded approval for the Coimbatore Corporation’s proposal to construct a Paralympic Multi Sports Complex, clearing the way for Phase I of the project at an estimated cost of ₹9.90 crore.
The project will come up on Corporation-owned land on the northern side of Jeeva Nagar Main Road near Kavundampalayam in Ward No. 33. Phase I of the complex will have a total built-up area of 42,764.71 sq. ft, comprising a ground floor, a mezzanine floor and a headroom area.
According to the Corporation, indoor game facilities proposed include sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, boccia, badminton and table tennis. Outdoor athletics events such as javelin, discus, shot put and club throw are part of the overall project scope and will be taken up during Phase II.
The ground floor, with a built-up area of 24,949.12 sq. ft, will include an entrance lobby with an information desk, office space, manager’s and conference rooms, two cafeterias and a kiosk. Team locker rooms and play areas are also planned at this level, including two tennis courts, one basketball-cum-badminton court and a boccia play area with a store room, along with common toilet facilities. The mezzanine floor, covering 17,020.14 sq. ft, will house a multi-gym, yoga room, two sitting volleyball courts, locker rooms, common toilets and a first-aid medical room with an attached toilet.
Parking facilities proposed under Phase I include space for five buses, 25 cars and 74 two-wheelers.
Of the total project cost of ₹9.90 crore, ₹7.08 crore has been earmarked for civil works, ₹48.76 lakh for electrical works, ₹6.99 lakh for plumbing works and ₹6.50 lakh for fire-fighting works. The remaining amount covers Goods and Services Tax and other charges such as centage charges, contributions to the Manual Workers General Fund, electricity connection-related expenses and provisions for unforeseen works.
The detailed project report for the complex, initially prepared at an estimated cost of ₹12 crore, was submitted in October last year and reviewed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT). Based on the review, the plan was revised and resubmitted by the Corporation.
As part of the revisions, accessibility-related provisions were updated in line with the National Building Code and the Harmonised Guidelines for Accessibility in the Built Environment (2021). Tactile guiding tiles from the main entrance to the ramp have been included in Phase I, while tactile connectivity for outdoor sports areas will be addressed in Phase II.
As Phase I is confined to indoor sports within the main building, connectivity to outdoor tracks and external toilet blocks will be planned and executed as part of the next phase. The detailed project report for Phase II is currently under preparation.
