The Coimbatore Corporation will issue notices to individuals and commercial establishments in Coimbatore city that are found dumping waste in public places.

A senior official said that despite sustained awareness campaigns and implementation of door-to-door waste collection, open dumping persists in several parts of the city. Efforts such as covering waste-prone areas with mesh and installing warning boards have not proved effective in curbing the practice.

To address the issue, the civic body has identified multiple hotspots and recently installed 440 solar-powered surveillance cameras to monitor and deter open waste disposal.

Visuals recorded by these cameras are continuously monitored at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). The monitoring team captures images of violations and forwards them to the respective sanitary inspectors and ward supervisors for follow-up action. After receiving the images, the supervisors visit the spot, identify the violators, and verify the reasons behind the dumping, such as the absence of conservancy workers, or a mismatch in collection timings.

When violations are repeated, notices will be issued to the individuals or commercial establishments concerned. Each notice includes photographic evidence showing the date, time, and location of the violation. Along with the notice, the violators are given advisories on proper methods of waste disposal. Continued violations attract fines of ₹500 for the first offence, ₹1,500 for the second, and ₹5,000 thereafter, the official said.
