The three accused in the Coimbatore gang-rape case were taken to the scene of crime late on Thursday to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the crime on the intervening night of November 2 and 3.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar told The Hindu that the investigating team took the three accused to the deserted area behind Brindhavan Nagar near Coimbatore International Airport on Thursday night.
It was on Thursday afternoon, the Additional Mahila Court granted the police one-day custody of the three accused – T. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh, 30, his brother T. Kaleeswaran, alias Karthik, 21, and their relative M. Guna, alias Thavasi, 20, of Madurai district.

They were taken to the scene of crime at night itself to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the gang-rape of a 20-year-old college student.
As per the findings of the police, the three came from their residence in Irugur to a vacant plot of land abutting the mud road connecting Brindhavan Nagar and SIHS Colony near the airport to consume liquor on the night of November 2.
They found the student and her 25-year-old boyfriend chatting inside a car between 10.50 p.m. and 11 p.m. The trio, according to the police, broke a window glass and the front windscreen of the car with weapons, following which the man came out. They assaulted him with weapons and abducted the student. She was taken to a deserted area behind the Government Polytechnic College after scaling a compound wall, where they gang-raped her.

The police had conducted a massive search for the missing student across the vacant plots and nearby areas, including railway tracks, after being alerted by her boyfriend. However, they could not locate her and the perpetrators. The accused escaped to Avinashi Road through the campus in the early hours of November 3 and the police could verify this from surveillance camera visuals, police sources said.
After being left by the perpetrators, the survivor sought help from a few residents at Brindhavan Nagar around 4 a.m. The police rescued her based on the alert of the residents around 4.20 a.m.
After the custodial interrogation, the police produced the accused before the court on Friday evening and they were lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Sources added that a formal arrest of the accused has been recorded for assaulting a head constable with a weapon, when they attempted to escape from the police at Vellakinar near Thudiyalur on the night of November 3. The police arrested them, after shooting them in the legs.
