With Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin instructing the police to file the charge-sheet in Coimbatore gang-rape case within a month, the investigating team is racing against time to complete the probe at the earliest.

The investigating team needs to corroborate its findings, forensic results, digital and physical evidence, statements of the accused, victims and witnesses.

The three accused in the case, T. Karuppasamy alias Satheesh (30), his brother T. Kaleeswaran alias Karthik (21) of Singampunari in Sivagangai district and their distant relative M. Guna alias Thavasi (20) of Madurai district, are undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH). Though the accused are undergoing treatment for the gunshots they suffered on their legs during an alleged escape bid on November 3, they are in judicial remand. Investigation team may have to wait for some more days to seek their custody for interrogation, police sources said.

Other formalities to be completed include the potency test for the accused, test identification parade (TIP) and compilation of results of key forensic examinations, including DNA analysis of bodily secretions from the scene of crime and from material objects like the dresses of the accused and survivor.

Police sources said separate TIPs will have to be conducted for the 20-year-old survivor and her boyfriend aged 25. TIP is normally conducted by a magistrate in a prison where the accused will be made to stand along with several others. The survivor and the man, who is also the complainant in the case, will be asked to identify the perpetrators. The investigation team will submit a plea seeking TIP before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who will depute a magistrate for the proceedings.

“Since the accused have suffered gun shots in their legs, they need to recover from the injuries, before proceeding for the TIP,” said a police officer.

The medical examination report of the victim will be another crucial part of the charge-sheet. The government doctor/s who conducted the examination will submit the findings before the jurisdictional court.

“Since the Chief Minister has instructed to complete the investigation in one month, we hope that various forensic examinations will be completed with priority,” added the officer.
