Tuesday’s “unusual windstorm” akin to the tornado like phenomenon that swept Lenkalagadda forest fringe areas in Jayashankar Bhupalpally’s Palimela mandal left crops in an extent of 30 to 40 acres damaged, and local farmers in distress.

According to preliminary estimates, crops mainly cotton, chilli and paddy, bore the brunt of the “unusual natural phenomenon”, official sources said, adding that several trees in the Lenkalagadda forest area were uprooted due to the impact of the unusual high velocity winds.

Collector Rahul Sharma, on Thursday, inspected the damaged crops near Lenkalagadda. Officials of the Agriculture, Horticulture, Revenue and Forest departments accompanied the Collector.

The Collector directed the officials concerned to enumerate the crop losses and submit a detailed report for ensuring compensation to the affected farmers. He also asked the Forest officials to ascertain the exact number of trees uprooted and take up new plantation to make up for the loss of trees.
