Reaffirming that the Congress government demonstrated its commitment for 42% reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) by taking resolute steps in this direction, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka alleged that the BJP lacked commitment to empower BCs.

He was speaking at a meeting held at Sanjeeva Reddy Bhavan in Khammam where the new president of the District Congress Committee N. Satyanarayana assumed charge in the presence of scores of party cadres on Monday.

“While the Telangana government truly cares about providing a 42% quota for BCs, the BJP which is at the helm in the Centre, does not share the same commitment,” Mr. Vikramarka said.

He said, “Soon after the Congress government assumed power, a survey was conducted to extend 42% reservations to BCs as per Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s announcement that a caste census would be conducted. A Bill was introduced in the Assembly, unanimously passed and sent to the Governor. The Bill has now reached New Delhi and stuck there.”

He added that a delegation led by TPCC president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud held a dharna in New Delhi and even sought an appointment with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request approval for the Bill.

“With the court directions requiring conduct of local body elections, the State government went ahead with preparations for Gram Panchayat polls. All arrangements will be made to ensure justice for the weaker sections through the party,” the Deputy CM declared.

He said Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has asked all MPs of Congress to raise the issue of BC reservations in the Winter Session of Parliament.

He alleged that the BRS leaders were issuing rhetorical statements, claiming credit without doing anything meaningful.

Mr. Vikramarka said the Earth Sciences University of Telangana is named after former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who introduced reforms that placed India prominently on the world economic map. The University is slated to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister in Kothagudem on Tuesday (December 2).

He called upon the party cadre to work with renewed vigour to ensure the victory of the ‘Congress candidates’ in the ensuing Gram Panchayat elections.
