The All India Congress Committee (AICC) observer J.R. Lobo on Monday (November 24, 2025) said the Congress is “indispensable to India” and its role in safeguarding democracy and shaping national development has been paramount since the pre-Independence era.

Mr. Lobo, accompanied by Tamil Nadu Congress Committee observers Vivek Lajapathi and Sivaraman, has been appointed to oversee the selection of presidents for the three District Congress Committees (DCCs) in Erode district.

Addressing the media, he said the Congress had fought to secure democracy during the freedom movement and later laid the foundation for national progress. “After Independence, Congress leadership introduced the five-year plans and key reforms in agriculture and education. If democracy is strong today, it is because of the Congress. Its contribution cannot be forgotten,” said the former MLA.

He said the current exercise is part of the party’s nationwide organisational campaign, Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan, launched after the recent AICC meeting in Ahmedabad to strengthen internal democracy and rebuild the organisation from the ground up. Describing DCCs as the backbone of the party structure, he said identifying capable leaders had become essential. “In the past, leadership at district and other levels sometimes became symbolic. Now we want result-oriented, development-focused and fully accountable leaders,” he said.

Mr. Lobo said the AICC will define the roles and responsibilities of the new district presidents and establish District Political Affairs Committees to encourage structured dialogue among party members and with the public.

After the district-level exercise, the campaign will move to the block, ward, and village levels. The initiative, he said, reinforces the Congress’ ideology of justice, inclusion and secularism, and aims to carry AICC’s message effectively to the grassroots.
