Constitution helped ensure social equality and justice to all, says MLC

The importance of the Constitution in ensuring equal rights to all, in equitable sharing of economic resources, providing opportunities to all, was highlighted during Constitution Day celebrated in the city on Wednesday.

The main event was organised by the district administration, Mysuru Zilla Panchayat, Mysuru City Corporation and the Department of Social Welfare.

C.N. Manjegowda, MLC, who inaugurated the programme, said providing economic and social equality and justice to all had been made possible because of the Constitution.

“It is because of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar that I am a member of the Legislative Council as the Constitution has given equality to all,” said Mr. Manjegowda.

Women and members of various backward caste and class communities did not have access to education and it was due to the Constitution that people are able to live with dignity, said Mr. Manjegowda.

Legislative Council member D. Thimmayya said that India, once plagued by hunger, disease and hardship under the British rule, had achieved economic progress and was developing fast due to the Constitution.

He said if the country had made great strides in various spheres, including agriculture, technology, etc., it \was due to Ambedkar. “If the nation has to fast track development, the caste divisions should be eradicated,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy said that all citizens should follow the Constitution with discipline and imbibe its values. He said youth were the future citizens and they should uphold the Constitution and its values.

Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif said that before the drafting and adoption of the Constitution, the poor, the Dalits and women were deprived of their rights and it was through Dr. Ambedkar and the Constitution that all citizens have equal rights and freedom.

Mysuru ZP CEO S. Yukesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police N. Vishnuvardhan, Joint Director of the Department of Social Welfare B. Rangegowda, and others were present. Earlier, MLAs Tanveer Sait and T.S. Srivatsa, MLC Mangegowda, garlanded the statue of Dr. Ambedkar near the Town Hall and flagged off a rally.
