Former Union Minister J.D. Seelam called for introduction of the Constitution as a subject in primary education to help students understand its values from an early age. He urged the State government to include it as a lesson in school textbooks. He added that he raise the proposal with State Education Minister Nara Lokesh.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the Dr B R Ambedkar Memorial Society at Ambedkar Bhavan on the occasion of Constitution Day, Mr. Seelam said that youth must develop awareness about the Constitution to understand the realities of developments taking place in the country. He recalled how some BJP MPs had once attempted to remove the word ‘secular’ from the Constitution, but the move was halted after a detailed explanation by several MPs in Parliament on the importance of the term and its role in promoting equality.
Political analyst and author Parakala Prabhakar described the Indian Constitution as one of the greatest in the world, and added that it is in a vulnerable situation today. He alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre has been weakening the Constitution for the past 11 years. He said that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar drafted the Constitution for all citizens, but some have forgotten this. Awareness programs, seminars, and discussions on the Constitution are essential to protect it, he added, noting that Ambedkar sacrificed his personal life to write a Constitution that guaranteed equal rights for the weaker sections.
Ambedkar Memorial Society president Boddu Kalyan Rao was present.
