Roads and Buildings Minister B.C. Janardhan Reddy on Saturday performed ‘bhumi puja’ for the Jurreru Vaagu flood protection bund works that are aimed at preventing the flooding of Banganapalle town during heavy rains.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the works were being taken up at a cost of ₹6.90 crore sanctioned under the District Mineral Fund (DMF).

“The bund will provide a permanent solution to the flooding of the town due to flash floods whenever it rains,” he said.

“The bund will ensure that the floodwaters from the upstream area do not enter the town,” the said, adding that this would also stop encroachment of the banks of the stream. Mr. Janardhan Reddy said the flood protection bund would be construction on both sides of the stream up to a distance of 1,250 metres from the SRBC Bridge to Old Bus Stand.

The Minister further said that a walking track would be developed on the bund in the future. The project was being taken up to divert 52,000 cusecs of water from the town. As the internal cement concrete drains were nearing completion, the water from the town would not mix in the stream, the Minister said, and added this would contribute to clean and hygaenic conditions in the town.
