Construction of the Vijayapathi sports complex and the seafood value addition centre at Koottapuli and fish landing centre at Koothenkuzhi commenced on Friday.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu and MP C. Robert Bruce formally inaugurated the construction of these upcoming facilities in the three coastal hamlets.

While the sports complex is to be established at a cost of ₹14.77 crore, the fish landing centre at Koothenkuzhi will be built on an outlay of ₹2.31 crore. The seafood value addition centre is to be created at a cost of ₹1.95 crore at Koottapuli.

After formally inaugurating the construction of the sports complex at Vijayapathi, Mr. Appavu said the Tamil Nadu Government was according highest priority for the welfare of the fishermen living in Kooduthazhai, Koottapanai, Uvari, Koothenkuzhi, Thomaiyarpuram, Idinthakarai, Perumanal and Koottapuli, all coastal hamlets of Tirunelveli district. The State Government had implemented several development projects including groynes to check sea erosion, fish landing centres, fishnet mending halls etc. in the coastal hamlets.

When Chief Minister M. K. Stalin visited Tirunelveli on February 7 last, he had promised to set-up seafood value addition centre in a coastal hamlet of Tirunelveli district and this facility would come-up at Koottapuli to rejuvenate the livelihood of the fisherwomen of this hamlet.

The fishnet mending hall, fish auction centre and the fish landing centre would be of great help to the fishermen and guarantee hygienic handling of seafood as it reaches the hands of the traders.

Moreover, the sports complex coming-up at Vijayapathi near Idinthakarai would fine-tune the sporting skills of the sportspersons, especially the athletes from the coastal hamlets of Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi districts, Mr. Appavu said.

ā€œTen acres of land at Vijayapathi near Koodankulam has been identified for establishing sports complex with multi-purpose stadium and the training centre at a cost of ₹14.77 crore. The upcoming sports arena will have gallery with dressing room, multi-purpose training hall, indoor volleyball and shuttle courts, gym, 4 X 400 meter athletic track, long jump field, football ground, outdoor basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho and handball courts,ā€ Mr. Appavu said.
