The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has launched a ₹15-crore initiative for road repair and patchwork across various zones as complaints about the city’s deteriorating roads grow louder.

The GCC has also allocated an additional contingency of up to 25% for contractors to handle extra work, said N. Chitrarasu, chairperson of the Standing Committee (Works), at Thursday’s Council meeting.

Mr. Chitrarasu said, “Bids have been invited for 286 road work worth ₹37 crore to be undertaken once the Northeast monsoon is over. Currently, work on 257 roads and 296 cement concrete roads, and ILP (interlocking pavement) work on 111 roads are in progress. If additional needs arise, tenders will be invited as per the government’s decision,” he said.

Listing the works carried out by the GCC since 2022, he said chain-link fences have been installed and flood protection walls built in 37 water channels. The work, carried out at a cost of ₹286.37 crore, is now 72% complete, he added.

Manali road maintenance

The Council also passed a resolution to extend the employment of 28 temporary daily wage workers from October 6, 2025, to October 5, 2026, in Manali Zone (II). These workers will be involved in duties such as road patchwork, debris removal, storm-water drain desilting, and emergency or election-related works.

The extension is necessary as only 25 of the 64 permanent workers are available for road maintenance, the GCC said.
