The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning 20 smart classroom projects in North Chennai under the Namakku Naame Thittam scheme.
Each school will get two smart classrooms under the project, which is planned to be implemented in Cherian Nagar, MKB Nagar, RR Nagar, Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Harinarayanapuram, Chinnakodungaiyur, Ganesapuram and MGR Nagar.
The project will be implemented at a cost of ₹60 lakh. Each smart classroom will have a 65-inch interactive flat panel, STEM visualiser, wireless tablet, microscope adapter, iron stand, carry case with trolley and HDMI accessories.
“The systems will be sourced from a single vendor to maintain uniformity in equipment and compatibility. The contractor will handle supply, installation and maintenance, and will provide standby units during the period of service,” an official said.
Notably, the civic body manages 417 schools across Chennai, but has only 3,146 teachers and 316 headmasters or headmistresses, according to GCC data. As of June 2025, 1,152 teaching and administrative posts remain vacant.

When asked if there are sufficient teachers to run these projects in the schools, a senior GCC official said that would be examined.
