The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has completed work on a pet clinic and animal birth control centre in Vadaperumbakkam in Manali zone. The civic body is planning to open the centre in a few days.

Once GCC completes work on pet clinics and animal birth control centres at all the 20 designated locations, the civic body will be able to achieve the target of sterilisation of 1 lakh dogs every year. Currently, the civic body has six animal birth control centres and pet clinics across the city.

Free treatment

Outpatient services for pets will be provided free of charge at the clinics from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Animal birth control surgeries for 30 dogs will be performed every day at each of the centres.

Work on additional veterinary clinics and animal birth control centres in Tiruvottiyur and Madhavaram is expected to be completed by December 15. The GCC pet clinic and animal birth control centre in Perungudi will be opened by the end of December.

Work on five pet clinics and animal birth control centres in Royapuram, Sholinganallur, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, and Alandur will be completed in February. As the civic body could not find a suitable place in Valasaravakkam zone, Alandur zone will get its second pet clinic and animal birth control centre. The existing pet clinic and animal birth control centre in Meenambakkam falls under Alandur zone.

Hiring veterinarians

The civic body will increase the number of veterinarians from 31 to 50 to improve services at the centres. The civic body has also started identifying land for the construction of additional pet clinics and animal birth control centres at five new locations. Once the five new centres are added, the GCC will be able to offer free services for residents at 20 pet clinics and animal birth control centres across the city.

By the end of February, the GCC will have 15 pet clinics across the city.
