Corporators from various parties highlighted the shortage of sanitation staff, delays in development works, and several other civic issues during the council meeting held at the GVMC office on Friday. The concerns were raised during a zero-hour session conducted by Mayor Peela Srinivasa Rao, in the presence of GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg and heads of all departments.

Ward 38 Corporator G. Vijaya Lakshmi raised the issue of insufficient sanitation staff in her ward, stating that at least 17 to 20 additional workers are needed. With her ward having the Poorna Market, sanitation has been severely affected, she said.

Ward 27 Corporator G. Veera Rao noted that his ward, which covers the Assilmetta region, once had 90 sanitation workers but now has only 60.

“When the ward is already reeling with limited staff, the situation worsens during VIP visits, as workers are diverted to clean the stretch from Telugu Thalli Flyover to the DRM office, leaving our ward neglected,” he said.

Corporators from Gajuwaka and Malkapuram also echoed similar concerns, stating that during VIP visits, their already limited sanitation staff are diverted to the airport area, resulting in poor sanitation in their own wards.

Ward 4 Corporator D. Yedukondalu Rao expressed disappointment that despite Bheemunipatnam’s merger with GVMC years ago with hopes of development, many areas in his ward still lack proper roads, drainage systems, burial grounds and drinking water facilities.

Ward 40 Corporator G. Nageswara Rao pointed out the deteriorating condition of a culvert in his ward, which caused severe inundation of colonies during the recent Cyclone Montha. He urged officials to clear canals before the next cyclone season.

Ward 28 Corporator Palla Appalakonda raised concerns over the poor condition of the BRTS Road stretch between NAD Junction and Pendurthi, stating that the stretch has been witnessing at least one accident daily.

Ward 10 Corporator M. Rama Lakshmi questioned the neglect of Mudasarlova Park, stating that it has huge potential to become a major tourist attraction. Instead, due to negligence, it has turned into a hub for alcohol consumption and anti-social activities.

Corporators Ch. Janaki Ram (Ward 37), Suresh (Ward 64) and others complained about long-pending development works that remain incomplete.

Several corporators also pointed out the shortage of burial grounds and the lack of basic amenities at the existing ones., construction of retaining walls in the hillock areas, improving street lighting, etc.
