Three members of a family died near Thirupuvanam in Sivaganga district on Tuesday after the two-wheeler they were riding was hit by a police vehicle.
According to police, Prasad, 25, a resident of Chittampatti near Melur, along with his wife Sathya, 20, and two-year-old son Ashwin, had gone to a relative’s house at Ananjiyur in Madurai district on Tuesday morning.
When they were returning home, another woman, Soneswari, 25, joined them, and all the four were travelling on the same bike.
When they were going near Sakkudi, a police vehicle from Ramanathapuram district, coming in the opposite direction, hit the bike.
Prasad died on the spot, and Sathya and Ashwin died on the way to hospital. Soneswari was rushed to Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment.
The relatives of the deceased staged a road blockade. As they refused to accept the bodies of the victims, Sivaganga Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad held talks with them and assured them that necessary steps would be taken to bring about justice. Subsequently, they called off the protest.
Poovanthi police have registered a case and are investigating.
