A massive fire broke out at a grocery shop in outer Delhi’s Mundka area, resulting in the death of the owner of the store and his wife, said the police on Saturday.

The deceased, Vineet, 31, and Renu, 29, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh, were trapped inside the store when the blaze broke out on Friday. After learning about the incident, teams from the local police station and fire services rushed to the spot.

According to the preliminary inquiry, a short circuit outside the shop’s counter area may have sparked the fire. The police also said that the plastic packets hanging from the counter may have exacerbated the fire.

The couple, while stuck inside the store, lowered the shutter in an attempt to escape the fire. This put them in trouble as the smoke filled the confined space and resulted in severe suffocation, said the police.

The police opened the shutter and rushed the victims to Oscar Hospital in Bahadurgarh, where they were declared brought dead. The officials said the crime team and the fire services have inspected the site, and a probe is under way.
