Communist Party of India (CPI) State Executive Committee member A. Ramanaidu on Saturday called on the public and political groups to strongly oppose any attempts to amend the Constitution in the name of religion, warning that such moves posed a threat to India’s democratic and secular foundations.
Addressing a theoretical and political training programme for district-level cadres at the CPI party office here, Mr. Ramanaidu said the cadres of Left parties must be ideologically equipped to fight for people’s issues. He alleged that the present political climate was marked by efforts to fuel divisions along religious, caste and regional lines for the sake of power, while sidelining Constitutional values.
Expressing concern over what he termed ‘covert attempts’ to change the Constitution, Mr. Ramanaidu urged the public to hold the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre accountable.
CPI district secretary S. Nagaraju and senior cadres from all the Assembly constituencies of Chittoor district participated in the meeting.
