Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] Kannur district secretary K.K. Ragesh has urged the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) to launch a comprehensive probe into the alleged large-scale corruption involving both the former and current Mayors of the Kannur Corporation.
He accused the civic administration of irregularities worth several crores in major development projects including the Chelora trenching ground, Padannapalam waste management centre, and the multi-level car parking complex in the city.
Mr. Ragesh alleged that a similar pattern of corruption had emerged in the Marakkarakandi sewage treatment plant project as well. He said that while the first tender worth ₹40 crore was duly advertised, a second project worth ₹140 crore was floated later under a changed name without issuing any public notification. “The old tender documents are still available on the official website. No transparency was ensured in the second tender,” he alleged.
Mr. Ragesh demanded that the Vigilance department thoroughly investigate the entire chain of corruption allegedly committed by both the current and former Mayors in the Corporation.
