The police on Friday arrested a Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] panchayat member for allegedly assaulting a booth level officer (BLO) in Kasaragod, Kerala.

The incident took place during a camp to fill enumeration forms as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at Payaradukka ward (Booth no. 78) on Thursday.

A. Surendran, a CPI(M) local secretary and member of the Delampady panchayat’s 8th ward, was taken into custody by the Adhur police based on a complaint filed by LD clerk P. Ajith.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred after Mr. Ajith handed a voter verification form to a neighbour after failing to meet the voter at his house, instructing the neighbour to pass it on when the person returned.

Mr. Surendran allegedly objected to this during the camp, accusing the BLO of not giving the form directly to the voter. When questioned about the objection, he reportedly assaulted Mr. Ajith.

The police registered a case under Section 132 and 296(B) of the BNS based on the complaint and took Mr. Surendran into custody.
