The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has urged the Nagapattinam Municipality and district administration to take up immediate repair works on several rain-damaged roads across the town.

In a statement, CPI(M) Nagapattinam town secretary K. Vengatesan said that many roads had been dug up for pipeline and other civic works, but the trenches were not properly closed. With the recent spells of heavy rain, these stretches had turned uneven, leaving several parts of the town riddled with potholes. As rainwater often masked the depth of the pits, motorists were exposed to frequent accidents.

Mr. Vengatesan said South Perumal Street in Ward 32 — a route widely used by residents — had deteriorated severely. He urged the municipality to carry out temporary restoration on the stretch until the monsoon ends.

Sources from the municipality said they had started to do patchworks on required places soon they would complete their works.
