For the second consecutive day, most places across Thoothukudi district witnessed continuous showers, with waterlogging reported in several low-lying areas in Thoothukudi Corporation limits.
Corporation workers were engaged in pumping out stagnant water from the affected localities.
Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Minister P. Geetha Jeevan and Thoothukudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy inspected the waterlogged areas and expedited the drainage operations.
Speaking to the media, the Mayor said, “Due to Cyclone Ditwah, continuous rain has been lashing Thoothukudi for the past 24 hours. As a result, rainwater has stagnated in certain low-lying regions.”
He added that there has been no major impact in east and south zones of the Corporation, noting that 400 Corporation employees are working round the clock to remove stagnant water, which was being drained through 14 channels into the sea.
In the past 24 hours ending at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, rainfall received in Thoothukudi district was as follows (in mm): Thoothukudi 32.80, Tiruchendur 59.40, Kayalpattinam 70, Kulasekarapattinam 48, Srivaikuntam 30.70, Kovilpatti 17, Ottapidaram 18.60, Vaippar 49, Vilathikulam 29 and Surangudi received 63 mm rainfall.
For the third-consecutive day cyclone warning signal IV was hoisted at V.O.C Port in Thoothukudi. Fishermen did not venture into the sea for the seventh consecutive day.
