A 20-year-old woman died and three members of her family sustained injuries after a portion of their dilapidated tiled house collapsed onto an adjoining asbestos-roof structure at Alamankurichi Udaiyar Street near Kumbakonam late on Saturday (November 29, 2025).

The deceased has been identified as Renuga (20), who had completed diploma in agriculture. According to officials, the family — Muthuvel (56), a daily wage worker, his wife Seetha (45), and daughters Kanimozhi (21), a BBA graduate, and Renuga — owned an old tiled house and an asbestos-roof dwelling on the same premises.

As the tiled house had been in a deteriorated condition, the family had been sleeping in the asbestos-roof structure. Due to continuous heavy rain, a wall of the old house collapsed around 11.30 p.m. and fell onto the asbestos-roof building where the family was sleeping.

All four suffered injuries. Neighbours rushed to the spot on hearing the noise and rescued the victims who were admitted to the Kumbakonam Government Headquarters Hospital.

Renuga, who sustained severe injuries, was later referred to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital for further treatment. She succumbed to her injuries past midnight, hospital sources said.

Revenue officials and Kumbakonam Taluk police are conducting an inquiry.
