As a precaution against cyclone Montha, at least 110 fisherfolk residing on Hope Island in the Kakinada Bay were evacuated and relocated to the Kakinada rural area in a joint operation drive on Sunday.

The fisherfolk make a living through traditional fishing in the Bay of Bengal and the Godavari estuary. The island is part of the Coringa Wildlife Sanctuary and is nestled between the Kakinada deep sea port in the Godavari estuary.

Kakinada District Collector S. Shan Mohan said that the fisherfolk have been rehabilitated to Toorangi village in Kakinada rural mandal to avoid any untoward incident due to cyclone Montha.

Officials from the departments of Port, Revenue, Fisheries, Forest on Sunday deployed six boats for the evacuation of the inhabitants of Hope Island. The relocated families will remain in the rehabilitation centre until further orders.
