The State government officials used drones extensively to carry out relief and rescue operations following Cyclone Montha. The drones helped officials in rescuing stranded people and livestock swept away by the floodwaters.
According to the AP State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), officials were able to rescue a man, identified as Sheikh Munna, who was being swept away in the floodwaters of a canal at Parchur in Bapatla district. Police rescued him based on the real-time information provided by the drones. The drones assisted the police and fire department officials in rescue especially in the low-lying, flood-affected areas.
Additionally, the drones aided officials in spotting a boat that was washed away in the Krishna river from the upper reaches. The information was alerted to the APSDMA, who immediately alerted the SDRF and swimmers, who spotted the boat at Tummalapalem and brought the boat safely to the river bank.
An APSDMA official said: “If the boat had reached the Krishna Barrage, it would have become a big problem leading to a potential disaster.
