Following the recent phase of northeast monsoon rainfall, the road condition in Nagercoil has significantly deteriorated, posing a threat to motorists navigating through several stretches in the city.

Although the recent rainfall received in Nagercoil ranged between light to moderate, it has already created a visible impact through the damages caused in Nagercoil. Among many stretches in Nagercoil, the Kottar locality has witnessed severe road damage, urging the residents to call for immediate action to repair the road.

A few months ago, the entire stretch from Nagercoil to Vattavilai was dug up for a drinking water project by the Nagercoil Corporation. With half the road dug up for the project, it had already made travel difficult for the motorists, increasing the risk of skidding and other accidents due to its condition.

A portion of the dug-up stretch until St. Xavier’s Cathedral junction was restored a few months ago, while the remaining portion was left untouched, contributing to the continued deterioration of roads in the Kottar area along the Nagercoil-Kanniyakumari highway.

Rubin, a resident of Kuruntheru, mentioned that earlier it was said that the road will be restored before monsoon, however no efforts were made in this regard. He added that during rainy days, the stretch from St. Xavier’s Cathedral to Prakkai Vilakku has become extremely difficult to navigate, noting that the stretch has three private hospitals, frequently accessed by local residents.

Mushthaq, another resident from Kottar highlighted that both the stretch from St Xavier’s Cathedral to beach road junction and Parakkai Vilakku are becoming unfit for commuting.

“Hundreds of individuals using two wheelers use these routes for office travel and to drop their children at school. They are at risk navigating through these roads, especially during rainy days,” he noted.

He urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore these roads.

Speaking on the issue, an official from the State highways department said that the dug up stretch will be completely restored after the monsoon ends and patchworks will be carried out in the damaged areas.
