Karnataka State Safai Karmacharis Commission Chairperson P. Raghu on Friday warned that delays in paying wages to pourakarmikas, auto-tipper drivers, and helpers would not be tolerated.
He instructed officials to initiate strict action against any officer responsible for withholding or delaying payments.
Mr. Raghu was speaking at an interaction programme with pourakarmikas, loaders, cleaners, and drivers working in the West Corporation and the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) limits, in Govindaraja Nagar.
During the interaction, a pourakarmika raised concerns about technical errors in the appointment orders issued to civic workers, including incorrect entries of date of birth, place of birth, and other record mismatches.
Responding to the issue, West Corporation Commissioner K.V. Rajendra assured workers that a special camp would soon be organised in collaboration with the Revenue and Social Welfare Departments to resolve these discrepancies. Errors in date of birth entries would also be corrected, he said.
The workers also said that they were being forced to carry out waste segregation illegally, and those who refuse were threatened with removal from duty.
Commissioner Mr. Rajendra said that supervisors involved in such practices would be warned, and action would be taken.
Mr. Raghu further noted that some pourakarmikas have faced physical assault and verbal abuse from members of the public while performing their duties and urged corporation officials to respond promptly in such cases and emphasised the need to ensure adequate protection for civic workers.
