The Department of Handlooms has launched a 45-day training programme in hand weaving and designing under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme, said the Director of Handlooms, Maheswari Ravikumar.

The Director told The Hindu in Coimbatore on Monday (November 10, 2025) that there are four skill development centres in the State for handlooms – Paramakudi, Erode, Kanchipuram, and Thirubuvanam. About 350 people were already trained at these centres.

In a move to expand the training programme, 100 people were selected under the Naan Mudhalvan Scheme and the 45-day training started on November 5. Another batch of 100 candidates will be trained after the first batch completes its classes. The aim is to attract interested youngsters to hand weaving.

Regarding Geographical Indication (GI), she said that 10 handloom products made in 10 different clusters have the GI recognition in Tamil Nadu. The process is on for three more and four more have applied. Uraiyur cotton is expected to get the recognition in another three to four months, Ms. Ravikumar added.
