Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy said that the ‘Safe Village’ programme will be rolled out across selected districts in Telangana, to tackle human-trafficking.
He made this announcement during a crime review meeting, held through a video conference with police commissioners and district superintendents, on Thursday, where serious offences, economic crimes and cases involving children, were examined in detail.
The DGP said that the programme will begin on a pilot basis in seven districts — Mahabubabad, Khammam, Warangal, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Vikarabad, Rangareddy and Medak — with the support of NGOs. Depending on the outcome, the programme may be expanded to other districts. The primary objective is to prevent human-trafficking by awareness campaigns and strengthening community vigilance at the village-level.
He instructed SPs in border districts to hold coordination meetings with neighbouring States to curb inter-state offences. He also urged officers to clear long-pending cases and highlighted the formation of a specialised Crime Intelligence Technology Analysis wing within the CID for technology-driven crime analysis.
Reiterating his stand on accountability, the DGP warned that corruption at the lower level will invite action against those in supervisory roles. He referred to the recent Tekmal incident in Medak district, saying it should not be repeated.
Senior police officials Mahesh Bhagwat, Charu Sinha, D.S. Chauhan, S. Chandrasekhar Reddy, M. Ramesh, K. Ramesh Naidu, Naveen Kumar, Venkatalakshmi, Satish and Legal Advisor Ajay Kumar, took part at the review meeting.
