District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has directed officials to take stringent measures to curb road accidents in the district. He also instructed them to install solar blinkers at zebra crossings along the National Highway.
He reviewed road safety with officials of the A.P. Transport Department, the Police, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and other departments at the Collectorate on Tuesday. He sought data on the number of accidents, injuries and compensation paid in hit-and-run cases, and discussed the preventive steps being taken by the road safety committee.
He told officials to replace defective traffic signals, install speed breakers on major roads, especially near educational institutions, and set up bus shelters wherever required. He said truck lay-bys should also be provided. He asked the Police and GVMC to take joint action to prevent footpath encroachments and to install CCTV cameras at major junctions.
Police Commissioner Shankabratha Bagchi offered several suggestions to strengthen road safety measures. Deputy Transport Commissioner R. Ch. Srinivas submitted a report on the action taken on issues raised at the previous road safety meeting.
